I do not trust people who kill things for fun. There is something missing in their soul. I think people who are so afraid of the world that they make themselves less safe by having a gun in their home are dangerous plain and simple. It is not even remotely rational.
What about option #3 - people who don’t hunt or have guns for self defense, but just enjoy the sport of target shooting?
How do you enjoy your "hobby" when you know that your ability to do that costs countless innocent children and women and men their lives every single day in this country? 1,300 children a year. A woman in the U.S. is fatally shot by her current or former intimate partner every 16 hours. But I'm glad you enjoy your hobby. Let me know when you find your soul?
I own a gun solely for sport. I do not hunt, and I do not anticipate ever using it for personal protection. I would gladly give up my gun if it saved lives. In fact, I would give up my gun if it saved even a single life. I would also have been willing to jump through A LOT more hoops than I did in order to purchase it. But me throwing my gun away doesn't accomplish anything. So just stop with this. You are making enemies out of people who would otherwise be your allies. No one I know who owns a gun (all upper middle class people, in case you're wondering what crowds I run with) says they do so because of the second amendment. None of them think they need to protect themselves from the government. And none of them would do or have done anything but support stricter gun safety laws. Those of you who are demonizing all gun owners are doing more harm to the progress of gun safety in this country than you are good. Just take a second to realize that, and stop being so polarizing. It's ugly.
If you threw away your gun your family would be appreciably safer actually but you are not willing to do that. It is disgusting that we are the only developed country that is ok with our children being killed in school. Nevermind the thousands of black children on the streets who lose their life to gun violence. That our children should be safe in the richest country in the world shouldn't be polarizing. The reason that people on the other side of this feel strongly is that the answer is so simple but people like you just keep putting up strawmen because you don't really want to modify your lifestyle and yet you don't want to accept that your behavior contributes to the deaths of thousands. 7 people died from tainted Tylenol in the 80s and now every single bottle has a sealed cap. 20 little, little kids were shot in their school and we as a nation won't do a single thing. If you are still owning a gun and going to a range you are likely contributing to the NRA. I'm sorry if standing out for our children and advocating for a society in which people can go to school and concerts and the mall and not have to worry about being shot to death makes me your enemy.
