Probably not, since there is not treatment. But it does concern me that the largest hospital nearest me (where we would go should things become critical), doesn’t seem to have the capability to get rapid test results and/or to communicate to the family in a reassuring way that they are treating the patient as if he has it and are treating him aggressively, as they would (I hope) any younger person in critical condition with pneumonia.

The PP you are responding to clearly has been following international news on this while you have not. The only countries that have distinguished themselves in handling this are the several Asian nations that went through a very tough challenge with SARS, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea and pulled out their playbooks to avoid a repeat.

There is NO European country that has handled this well, despite the praise one often sees here for their health systems.  Italy was clearly caught totally unaware but citizens say there were strong political factors behind the delay.  Let us look at countries that had ample warning that failed to take this seriously.

Italy has 350 cases per million; in comparison the US has 9.3.  I was a huge early critic of lack of testing (because I was following the Asian situation) and posted here about it but almost no one cared.  Let us say with more testing--on a par with some other European countries testing, bearing in mind that most have been only slightly less restrictive and some more restrictive than the US--we would have maybe three to four times as many or 30 to 40.

What's in between? Switzerland--256--they just closed schools Friday, a day after they closed some (not all) of their crossings with Italy and residents say testing is very restricted; Norway--222--again very slow to act although being one of the richest countries in Europe; Spain--166--just last week started closing down schools and pubic places; Denmark--149--just closed its borders Friday; Sweden--101; Austria--89; Belgium--76--just closed schools and public places; France--69--last weekend Macron and his wife went to the theater to encourage the French to continue going out despite the virus, but put in Spain type closures this weekend; Netherlands--66--testing stingier than the US; Germany--65--only now beginning to think of restrictions and testing is not widespread--unlike Spain and Italy they do not test the untested dead.

On this new thread people have lost track of the global situation as personal concerns (stockpiling, I am coughing should I get tested?) and political comments have come to dominate. If you think Obama, Clinton, even Bush fear chrissakes wouldn’t have handled this better you are DELUSIONAL. We all may have been a bit behind still but this administration is actively making things worse by continuing to deny the reality and insist this is some liberal plot to hurt Trump politically. Then they enact policies that are not only pointless but actually make things infinitely worse...see the OHare situation. And I absolutely believe they are deliberately not testing to keep the numbers down. He came right out and said he wanted the numbers low when discussing the cruise.

And my point is that any other US leader could’ve gotten things going faster, motivated allies, etc, because we are the US-effing-A. We had, like, a whole office at NSC set up to deal with just this scenario. But this is what happens when you decimate infrastructure for tax cuts for the rich.

Please tell me where the Democratic voices were on this?  It has already been pointed out that the only news personality who sounded the alarm early came from the right.

The last Dem debate was on February 25 as Italy was beginning to rage.  Not one mention during the debate.  If you think someone from another party would have done this better you are the one who is deluded. Both liberal and conservative governments all over Europe have not done well on this either, and there were no opposition voices in criticism.

I repeat, the only governments that have done well are those from countries that went through SARS.  And the only voices anywhere in the US decrying the lack of testing even before it was clear that Italy was a growing hotspot were on Reddit. [/quote]
