Let's picture a world where major league baseball was a not for profit organization. Everything would be done for the good of the game only. in this scenario, the league would have even more incentive to preserve successful teams like the Yankees and their legacy. It is not in the best interests of MCPS to "Disappear" one of their most successful schools. It lowers the overall quality of the school system. We at Wootton are not entitled. Let someone else have the new building. Giving it to us would be taking from those who need the new building more. We are fine where we are with minor repairs.
While I'm not going to claim there's zero benefit, it isn't clear to me there's a compelling benefit to "preserving the legacy" of Wootton or any other specific school in MCPS. The purpose of schools is to educate kids. That comes down to teachers, programs, and facilities/resources. Not specific buildings, and not specific names. Any (sufficiently large) school district can create a school with good numbers by simply pulling together only students from the richest families. But that doesn't actually improve schools or outcomes overall, or even necessarily individually. To the extent "legacy" can be preserved cost effectively and without harming the quality of the district schools as a whole, sure, do it. But maintaining an extra school for that purpose is a steep price to pay which will almost certainly come out of programs that are more necessary. I'm not thrilled with the outcome of assigning a new school to region 4 instead of 5, but long term that is going to be better for region 5 and everyone else than spending money on an extra school.
