I didn’t think we would ever see the self described “law and order” party would ever embrace a convicted felon who has a long history of lying and cheating. How far can Trump go before shame catches up with Republicans and they say we can no longer support someone who sees himself as above the law. Our first president George Washington said: “Virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government,”and “Human rights can only be assured among a virtuous people.”
As people said a lot during the Trump years, “law and order” is a sort of virtue (well… vice) signaling for fascism sympathizers and fascists. Note how they do not choose to say “rule of law,” which implies a situation in which the law is applied equally to all. No, “law and order” means a crackdown on the skulls they think are causing a problem, even a ginned up problem, even a problem they themselves created. It means a world in which those in power can operate with flagrant lawlessness and never have a consequence catch them but a person out of power can be shot dead in the street for selling loose cigarettes and the “law and order” people will say that justice was served and he should have complied. So it makes perfect sense that the “law and order” party think Trump’s charges are all political theater: in their worldview, he’s above the law.
