Oh FFS. What are you even talking about? I wanted to live in PG County, but couldn't get my husband on board. So we compromised with South Arlington.

And in my worldview "diversity" doesn't mean 80% and higher poverty or 80% ELL students. That's not "diversity," it's segregation.

This isn't just about children of privilege in South Arlington. It's about ALL of our kids and how their needs are not being met to the best of our ability. Peer to peer interactions should not be discounted. Not because wealthy or white children are superior and all should conform to their ways, but BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT. What better way to teach our kids this lesson than by allowing them the opportunity to be educated alongside children from life circumstances that are different from their own. If you want to promulgate fear and mistrust of the "other" there is no better way than to continue down the path we're on. [/quote]

On this we agree, mostly. The problem is that kids of different backgrounds and different socioeconomic statuses are not going to school together, with a few exceptions, and that is bad for everyone of every race, religion, color, SES. Kids who grow up in bubbles of privilege, or conversely of poverty, don't have the same breadth of knowledge, of understanding, as those who grow up in more diverse areas. And if your kid, regardless of race/ethnicity/color/SES gets squirmy if they walk into a room where most people are not exactly the same as them, then it's a problem for you, for your children, for us all.
