Yes, the "hyphen" building that was added in front in the 60s/70s needs to be rethought and redone.  The entrance to the school feels like a side door, the main corridor is cramped and the library upstairs is sorely in need of a renovation.  When I see what other schools are getting, it's concerning that Eaton seems to keep getting bypassed.  While the school yard is constricted and too small for much of an addition, a modest-sized “cut and cover” gym or multipurpose space could be added under the east side of the playground.  (Think of how Sidwell built its gym along 37th across from Hearst.)  Right now, one room serves triple duty for lunch, indoor gym and performance space, not to mention is closed to school uses on voting days when it is the local precinct.  A good architect could design useful, light-filled, modern spaces while respecting (and restoring) the historic detail of the original school building.  Underground parking like what Janney got would really be awesome.  Nearby street parking is quite constrained and right now, the teachers have to beg for visitors passes from friendly school neighbors.[/quote]
