I second renting in New York.  It's a huge waste.  Everyone is drinking the koolaid and thinks that it's normal to make 300k a year and only be able to afford a one bedroom apartment that's a million dollars and comes either monthly maintenance of a thousand plus.  In reality most people are renting and spending all of their money on going out. [/quote]

We made $250k/year and couldn't afford to buy. We figured even if we could, we'd have a mortgage of $3500 (if we were lucky) plus monthly maintenance of $2000. It's like renting from ourselves. I truly don't know how our friends are doing it.[/quote]

I agree.  Seems like buying there is more locking in the monthly payment than anything.  Have no idea how are friends are doing it either. Most have no plans to buy.  They all make a lot of money but don't save.  I suppose they will be renting during retirement.  [/quote]
