If you know anything about the school, you know that Chicago never gave 2 wits about polish. And that their new admissions preferences are first and foremost about finances, not merit.[/quote]

This is true of the graduate program, but not necessarily the undergrad program. They rapidly expanded their undergrad in the past 20 years in an attempt to catch up with the Ivies. They like the elite private school kids because they are just very, very smart and very prepared.

They also give preference to elite magnet school kids from schools like Stuyvesant and TJHSST. Research shows high school rigor is the biggest predictor of college performance. It makes total sense to reward students that endured a very tough curriculum, because they are most equip to take advantage of an elite college education. [/quote]

Overuse of the word "very."  Schools like UChicago like private school kids who have taken the most rigorous curriculum offered, because they are generally smart and well-prepared. That's about it.
