Surgeon guy probably has mental health issues or is an abuser, addict etc. He would’ve known that he would be a prime suspect and be caught fairly easily- and didn’t care (or was entirely out of his mind). As someone else said, he might have intended to kill himself as well and then couldn’t go through with it.

I find it somewhat unusual in that 10 years had passed since the divorce, the surgeon was living in an entirely different city but apparently had not remarried or moved on, and there were no child custody or alimony issues. [/quote]
