I also am having a hard time understanding the trafficking angle. Traffickers are horrific monsters who will prey on any vulnerable person but she was just so clearly not a vulnerable person. US citizen, involved family, well educated, older than an expected target, on a cruise ship where she would be noticed missing relatively quickly. It seems so extremely risky and like there are many other avenues available that would be far less risky. I guess on some level I also just hope that’s not the case because it’s such an alarming and terrible potential outcome.
You are forgetting it was almost 30 years ago. Being gay was not that accepted, this would have made her appear vulnerable to traffickers. She was petite, attractive, and partying with the band and employees. They lay a lure and she walked into it. No cell phones, no life 360 or find my, no social media. Cruise ships warn their employees about traffickers. Not because they care about their employees but they don’t want employees jumping shift at ports. Traffickers will attempt to lure employees with promises of higher wages, safety etc and then they are stuck. Cruise lines are truly horrible in terms of circling their wagons.
