I just don't get the LAC/non-LAC debate. Different options work for different kids. I have one at a LAC and one at a huge university. They wanted different things and both are having good experiences. I'm glad they had options that worked for them. Nobody knows DD's LAC but that's OK. It has a good reputation in her field and she got her job last summer (and returned to this summer) in part because of an alumni connection. It really doesn't matter if my neighbor isn't familiar with it.
I haven’t known any student who chooses a lac because they’re well known. They just like the education and want the attention, not sure why we need to fuss over that.
I mean..this isn't really accurate. I definitely know some kids that are WASP (though Swat and Pomona have a gap vs. Williams/Amherst) or die applicants just because they confer higher awareness and prestige vs. the rest...and are well-known in say finance or other careers they are seeking out.
j A gap? They’re the more popular choices with more interesting offerings and programs. If you’re into finance that badly, just go to an Ivy. No disrespect to any of these institutions and Williams is well ranked for finance placement- amherst has slipped behind CMC and Middlebury these days- but the audience you’re talking about are so few in number.
Hey…just stating the facts. There are some kids who will only consider the top 5-6 LACs and that’s it because of prestige/rankings.
But...they aren't facts. That's kinda the point.
But…you agree…there is similar shallowness with the very top LACs as the very top national universities. There are plenty of kids that want a Williams for the name that would never attend Colby or Bates because let’s face it…they aren’t in the same league.
There's absolutely no difference between the top 4 lacs. In fact, their acceptance rates and popularity are opposite their ranks.
Agreed…but many kids that want those schools would never even consider Bates or Colby because they don’t make the cut (sitting at like 25).
