Can someone please ELI5 this please[/quote] Some schools set aside seats for kids who qualify for "equitable access" and other schools give those kids a priority for admission through the lottery. The ways a kid qualifies for equitable access are by being homeless, in foster care, getting SNAP or TANF, or by being "in high school and are one year older, or more, than the age for the grade in which they were currently enrolled." So redshirt kids get a leg up in admissions and it matters --for Latin 2nd Street this year, there were 10 regular seats and 5 equitable access seats for 9th grade. The odds were much better for those with the preference. [/quote]
