I’m Jewish, and it’s been incredibly hard for me to villainize Israel. I was raised to see Israel as a vision of pride and strength for a people—my people—who had been victimized over and over again. But even I can’t deny it anymore. The country and its government have changed. I grew up with Rabin and Clinton and Arafat and hopes of peace. But that is all lost. It’s terrible. Oh the other hand, I feel like this has also led to so much anti-semitism. It’s been awful for the perception of American Jews. But when you hear people use words like “zios” as slurs it doesn’t exactly make you feel welcome in joining any kind of peace movement. I’ve just resigned myself to keeping my mouth shut and privately hating what Israel is doing but also not being horrified at the people calling for Israel’s total destruction.
The country and government have really not changed much in terms of their stated goals and their methods since it's inception; the only change is the pace at which things are occurring. The more you study and read on the history of Zionism, the more it becomes apparent. I have heard some political analysts refer to this accelerated phase as "Neo-Zionism" which is primarily happening because the state of Israel sees their window of opportunity as limited due to the ever increasing awareness from social media and the repercussions of their genocidal actions. As for the term "Zio" - Zionism encompasses so many evil principles with racism being at it's core. If someone ascribes to such an ideology, I really don't have sympathy for them being offended by the term.
Thank you for writing this. A lot of us who grew up in UMC neighborhoods and attended T20 schools, grew up and hung out with Zionists. We have been personally appalled that these people are not speaking up about Israel’s on-going atrocities. It has been confusing and eye-opening and frankly friendship-ending situation.
