Even the anti-Donald Trump graffiti on the streets of West Hollywood is scarce and halfhearted now. Eight years ago, California was the “resistance” state. It is a different mood that a visitor encounters in 2025: resignation, boredom with the subject, a we-had-it-coming attitude among thoughtful Democrats and, at times, something approaching curiosity about the economic potential of America under a deregulating president. A great liberal shrug is going on. It has been happening around the world since Trump clinched his win in November, and it is natural. You can’t be angry all the time. In the autocracies of 20th-century Europe, people of dissenting conscience often made what was known as an “inner migration”. That is, rather than flee or fight, they withdrew into private life as the political realm darkened around them. To detach like this is clever, not weak. Just don’t overdo it, that’s all. I sense that liberals have allowed a healthy acceptance of electoral reality to cross into a hope that Trump’s second term won’t be so bad. Please.
FT The great liberal shrug. That is where I am at. MAGA can burn the country down. The only thing I want is not to have my tax dollars help any red states. Other than that I do not really do care anymore. Oh if the Dems keep pushing moderates and talking about work across the aisle I will pass.
yep- im from MD, but a WI voter for a few more years. I have been calling and lobbying republcan officlas to propose and pass a bill that makes it illegal for any state to recieve more in federal funding (aside for military bases b/c im from MD) than they collect in federal tax revenue. I think all of us have to bear down and lobby our representatives to pass someting like this b/c that way at least our money will go to other wealthy, blue states that share our values and that we might move to in the future. with the economic growth in red states right now- it is quite possible that they might pass smething like this and educated states will always be wealthier than fundemental christian ones bar utah so My family and I will be rid of the albatross of Oklahoma and missisipi no matter where we choose to relocate.
So weird how the red states are constantly railing about big govt and a welfare state, but they ARE the welfare states.
