Obviously there were points in my life when I would not have welcomed a pregnancy, but so many women seem to be in a constant state of terror over it, and I’ve simply never understood it. There are so many ways to avoid pregnancy (I remember being 23, horny but a student with big plans, and I was on birth control, used a condom, made him pull out, AND made sure it wasn’t during my ovulation window; iuds weren’t even a thing back then), and yes, of course shit sometimes happens and it’s necessary or a good idea to abort, and I think it should be accessible and safe to do so, but there’s no reason to fret over it 24/7. I feel like I missed some fundamental part of being a woman in that I didn’t spend thirty years obsessing over possibly getting pregnant. [/quote]
Both things can kill you. For most of human history, women dying in childbirth was commonplace. It makes sense that girls feared pregnancy and childbirth more than HIV. Most of them didn’t anticipate contracting HIV, but expected to have biological children someday.
