Many white evangelical Christians believe the Bible is the ultimate law by which to govern. It supersedes any law written by Man. And that just like Saudi Arabia is a Muslim nation, America is a Christian nation. They are sidelined voices for now but that’s how all far right religious sects are. Do you think the Muslims always were this radical? During the Ottoman Empire, you could barely see a hijab and homosexuality was decriminalized where it was a big crime punishable by death based on British common law. The levers of influence always change from left to right and usually the Middle East and the West go in opposite directions: since the early 70s, the Middle East became significantly more religious and Sharia law became a thing and it’s the opposite in Europe and the US. It’s not outside the realm of possibility for it swing back to right wing here and left wing there in 100 years
Excellent post! So often religion is used as the reason for cultural mores when the religion in fact demands no such thing.
The Ottoman Empire didn’t Islamify Greece or the Balkans or the Caucuses. All of SouthEastern Europe would be Muslim if that were the case. Christianity and Islam are invader/colonizer religions but before WW1, the Islamic Middle East was far more liberal than Europe. It was the Brits in fact that criminalized homosexuality in the Middle East not the sharia law which was not practiced by the Ottomans. The Brits hated the Ottomans having control of the Red Sea which made traveling to India/getting to the Indian Ocean difficult. They made back room deals with the most extremist Islamist Saudi and Yemeni sects they could find called the Salafis/Wahhabis (these are like the ultra Hasidic Jews or super super right wing fundie Christian sect you could find). They believed in jihad, crusading, women can’t drive, secular music is immoral, we need to stone people to death etc etc). The Brits made a deal that to give these guys ARMS to fight the liberal city-slick Ottomans off the Red Sea and away from Saudi Arabia. Thus, it began. This was all before the end of WW2 in 1918. At the same time, the Brits promised the Jews their own state in Jerusalem with the Balfour Declaration in favor of helping dismantle the Ottoman Empire. So essentially, the Brits created the mess in the Middle East by wanting to dismantle the liberal Turks/Ottoman Empire and promising Arab and Jewish nationalism/revivalism and playing to their right wing religious ambitions of a Jewish state and Muslim state. This was something antithetical to the Ottoman Empire itself which stressed multi faith states. After the right wing backlash throughout the ME from the rural religious types , the Ottomans tried to save face by pretending to be a bit more religious but it failed and they lost stewardship over the Red Sea, Mecca, and Medina and the rest of the ME thanks to Brits using Arabs and Jewish independence ambitions to their advantage
