see how democrats hold other democrats accountable? [twitter]https://twitter.com/tomsherwood/status/1727110525627281914[/twitter]
https://moco360.media/2023/11/21/maryland-cair-director-suspended-from-state-hate-crimes-commission/ No paywall with this link. Her name is Zainab Chaudry and she’s a big deal at the state and national level. I knew who she was through her leadership position at CAIR. WaPo is covering the story as well.
Read Zainab’s oped in the WaPo on allowing parents to opt out of school readings that include LGBTQ characters. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/17/montgomery-parents-want-opt-out-sexuality-education/
Because religion, right? Their anti-lgbtq is part of their religious beliefs…or culture, right? And that somehow gives them a shield…or sword when it comes to defending their religious freedom or right to be (at best) intolerant. Let me just go on record as saying I’m fine with people of any religion or culture as long as they don’t use their religion or culture to perpetrate inequality. We wouldn’t be ok with a religion or culture that perpetuates slavery or racism, so let’s not give a religion or culture a free pass to be anti-lgbtq, etc.
That's pretty much all religions.
Not quite. Her op-Ed hits close to home. This became an issue in Montgomery County Public Schools and it was largely driven by Muslims. It went beyond books to the family life curriculum in health (sex ed/safe sex). The catholic pope has softened on lgbtq issues, and he’s the official spokesperson. The reality is most Americans aren’t religious—and if they affiliate with a religion they aren’t rabidly committed to outdated teachings. For me, it comes down to what the average practitioner says. And Zainab is an average practitioner who has a platform through her day job and other professional affiliations—which she should presumably use to build bridges and tolerance. Yet she hasn’t. Back to the point: this all played out in MoCo, and the group with the anti-lgbtq agenda wasn’t catholic or Jewish.
