I am a fairly educated immigrant, for context. I think it is highly disingenuous of people who are well off and well educated to talk about “reprogramming” their own less fortunate countrymen. Let’s face it, the US public secondary education system is a disaster. Don’t just blame it on the republicans; it’s a disaster in most of the blue states as well. The country doesn’t have the resources to combat generational poverty that is already here, yet insists on bringing more low resourced people in. I am not stupid and I understand the basics of foreign policy; I know what the US gives to Ukraine and Israel is far from charity and eventually serves to secure most world resources for the US citizens. Yet, there comes the time in every household when there os simply not enough money to continue investing, as all of it is spent on everyday needs that have become overwhelming. These needs are now precisely the people who need “reprogramming”. They need to get decent education, they need to have a future. Time to put the investments in other causes on hold and repair the rift within the family. The “deprogrammables” are your countrymen and they are created by this country, by all of us. Let’s not pretend these shameful people are not our relatives.
Generational poverty is a result of many factors, but generally speaking, there is generational poverty in every country. When the dems are in control, there are things like a Childrens Tax Credit and SnAP which help address the issue. Further, the Dems believe in public education and the enlightment theory that an educated populace collectively makes good decisions. The GOP are opposed to these ideas, they undermine public education in favor of publicly funded religious education, and i could go on. The bottom line is that for the better part of the second half of the 20th century, the US did well because it invested in public education, it invested in unions and a strong middle class. The GOP has gutted it over tax codes and corproatizaation of everything.
