I was in SF a couple of weeks ago - in the 'good areas' - and I had a good time. The parts that are totally imploding are areas that have long been bad - that doesn't make it okay - in fact it will continue to drag down the city - but for most generic tourists you're fine visiting the city. Their big problem is the collapse in office space that won't easily be reversed w/in the next 3 yrs. They need to focus on attractive STEM-related industries that don't necessarily need to be associated with SV. I think that life sciences is an a good target, but others can offer up their thoughts.
There was a very good discussion of all of this on Morning Joe this am with a guy who lives in SF and is an expert in something. He said basically this, that it's the always-bad areas that are the problem combined with the collapse of office space. Violent crimes are actually at an all-time low, and much lower than many other cities (ahem, red states) but it's the other crimes that are up and that is what is scaring people away. Also, the culprits are really drugs/fentanyl and lack of housing.
