I heart Connor. The cake story was so sad.
He was the only one I felt sorry for. All Logan did was ignore, belittle and manipulate his kids. I don't buy there would have been an ounce of affection or grief after everything he put them through.
Well as someone who had a very dysfunctional childhood and complicated relationship with a parent who died unexpectedly, I thought it was believable. The Roy kids are so emotionally stunted, they had such a difficult time saying I love you in his final moments, and being vulnerable at all. It was like they were fighting with how they really felt and how he thought they were supposed to feel. Incredible acting.
Yes, I think it was so well done. It was what Kendall said - people will be watching their response and even beyond that, they fight against what they feel vs what they are supposed to feel. When Kendall was on the ship deck, he looked so free for a minute. That was before and after crying. Even if they don’t truly feel sadness for his death (which I do think they do), he leaves a huge void in their lives. They have always reacted to situations based on how Logan will react or what he expects. They likely feel untethered and unsure because they have never in their lives been independent in thought and actions. All of that plus the fact that they are complete nepo babies, going up against seasoned competent people like Jerri etc will be interesting to see. The kids have always thought those people were employees but now daddy’s not around. Should be fun!
Agree with all of this. A favorite moment of the episode for me was after they did the press conference when the three kids were outside and wondering if they should go over to meet their dad's body as it came off the plane. Roman clearly felt obligated to go and Shiv said something like "It's not like dad will get mad at us if we don't" and I found that so relatable as someone with a similarly withholding, overbearing father. That realization that FINALLY you are truly free of their judgment and punishments. I wonder if watching Succession has made any people who parent the way Logan did realize "oh, I've basically made it so my children will celebrate my death because I've made impossible for love or support to exist in our relationship." That would actually be amazing to me. I remember when one of my uncles died my dad was really moved by the way his daughters, my cousins, just really surrounded my uncle with love and support. And then I watched it slowly dawn on my dad that it wouldn't be like that for him because we don't have that kind of relationship. It was really sad. He did try harder after that but he could never shake his impulse to belittle and judge, and he just didn't know how to offer actual support or validation. A lot of peopel won't let you be open about stuff like this, so yeah, you do have to kind perform an expected kind of grief. And you are sad, but it's for all of it, the entire relationship, not just for the loss of this person. It's grief for the loss of ever having a loving parent -- it's now officially too late and that will never be something for you. It's profoundly said but in a much more complicated way than just "I miss my dad." In a far less socially accepted way.
Well thought out and agree with a lot of your points. I think that’s why this episode was so impactful, in addition to the amazing acting
