When I attended, I think Tufts was ranked 24. I've seen it fall over the decades to now be 30. I think it is placed correctly and I think it might fall further. It's a tweener university - it's in between - not a small elite liberal arts college (Tufts is enrollment is 2.0- 2.5x the size of Williams and Amherst) and doesn't have endowments and research capabilities that NYU and Emory have, nor does it have the man-on-the street brand recognition that BC does. I worked in MA for several years after graduation and I worked with people who knew Bridgewater State but had never heard of Tufts. It only has cache in NY, NJ, DC areas.
Bad take. It was only ranked that high very briefly and only because of the common app came out opening the flood gates of apps to a bunch of schools screwing with the numbers and causing other schools around that range to take a hit for a hot minute. Sounds like you must have gone around then in the late 90s. That 24th ranking was a mirage... It’s probably a very solid school that isn’t going to close doors or hamstring the prospects of motivated students. It’s not an IVY or top 20 school. Figuring out whether it is better than Tulane or Wake Forest or Emory is splitting hairs and should come down to fit for DC. If two kids for those schools app for Med school or Law school with the exact same stats would “Rochester” vs “Tufts” be a deciding factor for admissions? Doubt it
21! It’s not like this is for Olympic medals and Emory is left off the medal podium in 4th place. Sheesh. ...But Emory is a top 20 school, and Tulane does not come close to what Emory is. Neither does Tufts.
I mean technically it’s not. At least it’s not in the top 20 for US News. Maybe top 20 in another set of rankings?
