Whether you send your kid to a school with no, or almost no, kids on grade level is a real question for DC parents, including for parents whose kids are not on grade level. When NCLB was proposed, it received the support of a large portion of the CBC. The foundational part of NCLB is school accountability based on testing. PARCC testing is a direct result and a legal requirement of NCLB. Leaving PARCC aside, I am curious if you could propose an alternative objective measure to assess educational attainment. I would also like to understand how you would try to use that assessment to measure attainment without some form of standardization. I am good at test taking. I agree tests need to be reconfigured and biases removed, but these examples are not them. [/quote] I don’t think the PARCC is biased. I do think the amount of time they take is excessive, and they incentivize teaching to the test. But overall they are an important way to measure how kids and schools are doing. The fact that some DCPS HS have 0% math passing - and only a handful of 3s even! - is really atrocious. It indicates that the school as a whole is so lost that they have given up even pretending that they are teaching math, at all. So much so that they don’t even bother to try to get anyone to pass.[/quote] Part of the problem is who they are testing. They only test in 9th and 10th grade in high school and not the kids that are taking the most advanced math so they do not test the strongest math students. My child took geometry in 8th grade, she would not be tested on math in high school as they only test up to algebra I and geometry.[/quote]
