Teachers know. Anyone who has been teaching for 10+ years has seen decline. Teachers are told to “differentiate” instruction. It’s possible, but it is causing many talented, hard-working teachers to leave the profession. It is next to impossible to meet the needs of all the learners in a given classroom - especially when some of them do not even speak the language. Not only do many of these students not speak English, many are illiterate in their native tongue. There is no way I could be an effective teacher today. ~ Former FCPS teacher
Actually, this is key. Its impossible to teach second language literacy without a solid foundation in the first. VA has a great ESOL track, but that's different from teaching basic literacy to a teen, plus academic content, plus second language. We are asking a lot of schools and teachers. These students need their own program.
