Against my better judgement, I'm posting the link to my blog post about last's night's Community Conversation here. I was in and out of the meeting, but I think I got the gist of it. Enjoy.
Hi Christopher, Maybe it is time you stated your current position on this issue? You have posted before on perceived overcrowding issues at Wilson and Deal. If that it is still your position you my want to disclose that. I was at this meeting and it seems like you only selected quotes that makes your position stronger? Maybe it also time you disclosed you have a vested interest on this issue? E.g. if ward 4 students leave for ward 3 that may impact your educational organization that primarily caters for ward 4 students? Also didn’t you kids attend deal/Wilson through SES? When your neighbors are trying to do the same, why cast them as defensive?
I'm totally confused. I know Chris IRL, he's a good guy, and I think he did a good job of trying to maintain neutrality in his blog post in order to represent all sides of the issue. Why the aggressive tone here--what is your angle? And why do you keep pulling his kids into it? Pretty low-class, IMO. I mean, I think I know who this is IRL, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's them, but still, very petty to fling insults and innuendo here anonymously. As for keeping the Deal/Wilson feed, I can sort of see both sides. More families are staying in DC and using public schools, both gentrification and willingness to live in non-lily white neighborhoods is pushing more newcomers EOTP, and we can't keep stuffing kids into Deal and Wilson forever. That said, it makes sense that SP families (I'm one) would want to remain inbound for more proven, desirable schools. No one ever wants to get rezoned for an unknown; there is more risk when being zoned to a new, unproven school, and legitimate concerns for both the educational quality/"bleeding edge" issues, and property values. The same discussions go on on the MD board, where as I understand it, there is talk of rezoning parts of Kensington out of Walter Johnson to a new high school. Re: the "bleeding edge" concerns--I am sympathetic to those east of GA to who want to pull Shepherd or Shepherd/Lafayette into NN in order to ensure a strong cohort. However, it's not gonna happen right away, by any stretch. Just a handful of kids go from Shepherd to Deal as it is each year--not enough to make much of a difference at NN. People in Lafayette and SP already heavily use privates, and also charters in SP. I'd imagine it would take the better part of a decade, or more, before they would send their kids to any new schools after being zoned out of Deal/Wilson.
