I was in Tiffany's yesterday buying something. I had on an ethnic shawl that was fabulous. A woman complimented me and asked me where I got it b/c there was no way I got it in DC. She said was from SF and cannot believe how unstylish women in DC were. She'd been here for 40 years. I told her we used to be more stylish and she disagreed!
The compliment was nice, but it can be irksome when someone assumes that just because they don't know about the existence of something that it must not exist. There are a lot of ethnic clothing stores in the DC metro area. Her local shopping is probably limited to very bland stores.
Right? There are lots of places to buy "ethnic" clothing and accessories. They tend to serve the "ethnic" community, and are probably not at your basic mall. It's also irritating, because what people really mean when they say "DC women are so basic" is "white UMC DC women are so basic." There are plenty of AA women who dress fabulously, for example. Go to an AA church on Sunday morning and you'll see plenty of personal style. DC also has a large Latino community, especially immigrants from El Salvador, and many of those women dress very differently than UMC white women. Ditto for lots of other ethnic groups--if you think all DC women dress alike, you need to get out of your bubble.
