This is the story of a lot of older, angry Americans who have spent the last decade living off a steady diet of Fox News and #fakenews. They have zero perspective on the damage they are doing to America's reputation, economy, legacy, and institutions. And they won't be alive long enough to do the hard work of rebuilding. Roseanne is just the outgrowth of much bigger symptoms at play in American society.
Stereotype much? No. This is the story of one idiot woman. Kind of ironic that her show exposed racism--all kinds of racism. Did you ever watch it? If you had, you would be surprised at Roseanne's tweet. Her family included lots of different types of characters (including an African American granddaughter and a cross dressing nine year grandon.) It addressed lots of different social issues in a realistic and loving way. Her show could have helped a lot on both sides of the political spectrum. She did not play a female Archie Bunker. It was not a show that encouraged racism. The last show I watched exposed racism against her new Muslim immigrant neighbors. It began by exposing her fear of her new neighbors and ended with her attacking a cashier for her racism against the neighbor. The show could have accomplished a lot. It explained her fear--but, showed her growth. That said, if you have ever paid attention to her antics, you would know that Roseanne has always done "off the wall" and inappropriate things. I agree with others that this is likely the worst offense--but, certainly not the only offense. I agree that ABC did the right thing--I'm just sorry because I think the show could have done some good.
