This article is heartbreaking. http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2018/04/hart_family_deaths_show_--_aga.html It’s a comprehensive article about how the children were isolated from people who would have seen what was going on AND how even when people reported them the parents were able to evade scrutiny by moving out of state, not registering as homeschoolers, etc. The child protection agencies are not perfect. And when they fail, disaster results. What can we as a society do To help them protect children???
I didn't have time to read the whole article. But as a social services worker in another state, I can guarantee that even if new policies and guidelines were put in place to keep better track of home school and isolated kids, there wouldn't have been time to adequately train the employees. They're just too busy. Taking one day to train them means an entire day of work lost. If states could afford to hire more people so that caseloads we're manageable (by manageable, I mean small enough to allow for things like time for extra training as needed), things would have been different for the kids who were murdered by their parents.
