Are college scholarships now taxed?
No. Graduate stuxents doing work towards their PhDs get a salary called a stipend. That will be taxed. And if your employer gives tuition assistance that will be taxed.
It's more than just taxing the stipend. Many graduate degrees are tuition free. The GOP bill proposes to tax the value of that education. So right now, a grad student earns $20,000 and gets and education worth $80,000. Right now, that grad student, if they have other income will pay on that $20,000. In the future, they would have to pay taxes on $100,000. So much winning.
And why should the Federal government subsidize your useless Ph.D in epistemological philosophy? MD JD and MBA who take out loans to finance their educations are charged interest on top of being taxed on the eventual income that is then used to pay off loans. If your degree can't handle the cost it takes to get it, then maybe it's not worth our tax dollars either and better for all of us that you don't get it.
+1 Also, we are producing WAY TOO MANY PhD's who can't get jobs in academia and eventually transitioning into work that they just didn't need a PhD to ever do. It is a total ponzi scheme benefiting existing professors and desperately needs reform.
Just want to add to this. A friend of mine (PhD from a top public university) was only one of two in his program to get a tenure-track professorship out of the gate. His colleagues are having to cobble together adjunct jobs, scramabling for very low pay.
