We believe that people have agency or the freedom to choose whether to accept it.  So in other words, Mormons felt compassion for Holocaust victims and were trying to do a service for them.

You must be Mormon because you have been sold a bill of goods and you refer to it as "the church", which all Mormons do.  No, the Simon Weisenthal Center found out about the practice and made it public. Only after that did the LDS church stop baptism for the dead.  Read here "Baptism of the dead".  They baptized Anne Frank, Adolf Hitler, Irving Berlin, Albert Weinstein.
