Have you ever been to the park?  There is a large area for a hitting wall outside of the tennis courts and the apron around the tennis courts is also much larger than it needs to be - there is plenty of space there for 2 tennis courts and a pool with the associated required facilities.

OMG what is wrong with pool opponents - go and look at the satellite image to get an idea of the relative sizes of tennis courts and a standard DC outdoor pool.

You will probably not understand this either but if you compare the size of each park maybe you will realize that Hearst is not actually a small site.  Unlike the brains of of some of the people who keep flailing around on this thread.[/quote]

I live in AU Park and wish they would put the pool over at Turtle/Friendship Park.  It's got a lot of room, and AU Park is Kid Central in Ward 3![/quote]

They just spent millions re-doing Turtle Park.  It might have made sense pre-renovation though unlike Hearst Turtle Park is very intensely used.  It's also nowhere near public transit or other activity hubs so its not really very convenient.[/quote]

The reason why Turtle Park is popular is that there are so many kids.  That's a good thing, and a more compelling reason to build a pool.  As for public transit, both Turtle Park and Hearst are about a block from a major arterial with frequent bus service and a couple of blocks from a cross bus line.  Both are some distance from Metro, although Turtle may be closer to Tenley than Hearst is to Tenley and Van Ness.[/quote]

Turtle Park is popular because it is a nice park with a lot of programming.  Hearst could be the same and is probably just as close to as many kids.

Also Turtle Park has nowhere close to as good public transit options.  Sure it is a couple of blocks from the Mass Ave buses but they are infrequent and reach nowhere close to as many people as the multiple bus routes that serve Wisconsin Avenue or the crosstown routes like the 96 or H buses.

Turtle Park is well used and adding a pool there would take away from an existing popular use.  Hearst Park is barely used at all and adding a pool there would actually make the park a better utilized public resource.

It is also worth adding that when school is out, which mostly overlaps with the summer pool season, there is a lot of on-street parking around Hearst.  [/quote]
