It was 1976. You have a clear memory of wearing a blue bikini with red rick rack trim standing next to you mom while she mixed a pitcher of Tom Collinses in the kitchen and sang along to Captain and Tennille. Your mom handed you the pitcher and said "take this to your father, and for God's sake don't drop it," then she leaned against the kitchen counter and lit a cigarette from her pack of Virginia Slims. Your dad was sitting by the pool sulking (and smoking) because he'd just been fighting with your older brothers Andy and Alex. Dad was pissed (or angry, dad would be pissed if you used the word pissed) because Andy and Alex wouldn't cut their hair and were in a garage band.  Dad had just told them that if they wanted to look like hippies they could get out of his house. You handed dad the pitcher and dove into the pool swimming underwater all the way from one end to the other. You went upstairs and listened to your new Bellamy Brothers album (quietly). That was the last day that the 5 of you were every together in that house. Your parents stayed together for another 10 years.

Your brothers moved to California. One had some minor success as a musician and spent years touring, the other got into tech when it was taking off-now he has serious money and tells everyone who will listen that getting kicked out and not going to college was the best thing that every happened to him. You stayed out of trouble, studied hard, and went to College Park and then law school. You never wanted to end up like your mom, dependent on a man who treated you like dirt.  You wonder if maybe watching your parents' relationship is part of the reason you are divorced? But you're happy-supporting yourself fine, dating a nice guy, and divorce is always hard for kids but your two girls seem well-adjusted. Your older girl just organized the walkout at her school and you're really proud of her. It's strange to even thing about that little girl that you once were.[/quote]
