Laugh all you want.  The parents at a typical scholastic chess tournament make lax sideline parents look like wussies.  Couple the most intense immigrant aspirational zeal with helicopter parenting and drive for academic success and you have scholastic chess.  Made worse by the requirement to hold your tongue during play.  The local lax bros would get eaten alive in this environment.

My nephew is currently ranked over 1700 at 9yo but in the end it ultimately comes down to talent and hard work.  According to my bro, kids usually don't get private coaching until around 1200 unless they have crazy, pushy parents and there are those too.[/quote]
