I hear what you're saying but it doesn't quite add up. If MLS Next is CY and a kid born on 10/15/2014 isn't good enough to make the 2014 MLS Next team, why would BSC put him on the "2015" team at U12? The following year he couldn't play MLS Next at U13 with the 2015 team and would have to try out again for the 2014 team that he already didn't make. I don't know why MLS hasn't decided yet, or maybe they've decided and haven't made a public statement. In general, MLS Next doesn't allow kids to play for their HS teams so why would they care about SY teammates?
BSC would put a Q4 2014 on their U12 team (8/1/14-7/31/15) if it helps them win. You should drop any thought of 2015 and U12. Plain and simple. If that 2014 does not make the U14 MLS Next I or II teams the next year, they will be eligible to play for the U13 NAL 3rd team and that will be USYS and for ages 8/1/14-7/31/15 or play up with the U14 NAL 3rd team. Confusing, yes, which is why there are hundreds of pages dedicated to it and why the simplest solution is for MLS to go SY and deal with BY for national teams and international tournaments which is .01% of the soccer population. This is an international area where a lot of top players come from countries who play 7v7 through U13. You will have 8/1/14+ good enough to play MLS Next who will choose to remain in 9v9 for additional development so it would be wise for 2015's, in particular, to adjust their expectations going into this spring. It is an American phenomenon to rush to 11v11 and MLS Next. Development is a long, slow process.
I appreciate the thoughtful response. I generally disagree that a Q4 2014 player who doesn't make the U13 MLS Next I or II team for 26-27 would easily step into the top U12 2015 team. The current 2014 top team lost several top players from last year's team and has generally struggled this season. My guess is that they only have 2-3 players with BY after 8/1/14.
We were one of those families who left. Yes, they are struggling because they don't have SM and loss a lot of talent as a result. Most of our kids were there for SM. I don't know their breakdown but I do know this. There will be Q4 2014's from Potomac, Achilles, Coppermine, SAC and smaller teams like Juventus, Liverpool, etc. playing in EDP at tryouts for the new U12. There will be a wide open competition for the U12 teams at every club, not just Bethesda. Just prepare yourself accordingly.
So who is as good as SM that these families were willing to jump to? I've been really surprised that so few clubs have consistency in coaching that would encourage families to stay. SM is a good coach but why doesn't BSC just have coaching standards and check on all coaches to make sure they're implementing whatever development philosophy/strategy they have?
