Based on Max Brooks' books World War Z and the Zombie Survival Guide- zombies will freeze in the cold but reanimate when they thaw. Many people headed north during the initial outbreak and that helped protect them from the zombie infestation. However, food shortages and exposure caused millions to die and subsequently resort to cannibalism to survive. Not a great option. As for the shore option- water isn't a protection either. Zombies can float and also roam the ocean floor by the millions. So many survived on boats (including a stolen Chinese nuclear sub) but an island would not have a secure perimeter. Offshore oil rigs are one of the most secure locations as far as zombies are concerned but a lack of fresh water and corrosion from salt water are constant problems. That being said- my plan is to head for the Florida Keys, secure the bridges, and create a secure perimeter with semis and storage containers.
Storage container homes! And we would be protected from hurricanes, too.
Not for homes- I'd lay them end-to-end for a 10 foot high wall. All we'd need is a heavy duty forklift to move them around. You could also stack them in a 2-by-1 pyramid for a very high, easily defendable wall to protect against human incursion. Then take a semi truck, weld sheet metal to one side (protect the cab and prevent walkers from going under) and you've got a simple, movable door. My choice of hand weapons would be a mountain climbing ice axe or a Lobotomizer- a 2 foot hand shovel with axe blades added just below the shovel.
Yeah, the storage containers as perimeter would be great. But I would also convert a storage container into my home. I would sleep better at night.
