What do high schools have to do with it?   If they are all delayed two hours or closed that gives the workers more time to get there or clear.   Why can’t you pay one of the child care workers to come to your house and uber them if they don’t drive.  Problem solved. [/quote]

Yes, I do and I’ve worked in child care.   Clearly you haven’t given your unreasonable expectations of minimum wage workers.  Bottom line you need a back up care taker.

A sahp can have other things going on and need child care.  If a sahp is on the board and has meetings, they’d need child care.   If a sahp has medical or other appointments, they’d need child care.  [/quote]

I'm curious how the is "backup" is safer for the provider than opening child care. My backup is my parents who live 20 minutes away. It's much safer for us to drive to the school.[/quote]

Thanks for stating the obvious. So we can agree that MCPS prohibiting providers from opening (providers that were able and willing to open) means parents miss work and in many cases lose income. Many of these parents are MCPS staff with young children. What is the point of opening schools if you make it impossible for the staff to go to work?[/quote]

My kids are old enough to stay home, but I agree with you wholeheartedly. For many parents, the "back up plan" is actually the school-based provider, which up until this year was a reliable source of back-up care.

I used to keep my kids in one day a week of aftercare just to access the "drop in" option for days when schools were delayed, for example. This meant that the provider opened at 8:30 rather than 6:30, for example, still allowing me to make almost a full day of work.

But this year, the policy changed so that school-based providers weren't allowed to open until the school itself did, which in some cases meant not until after 11 am.

I feel like some of the folks on this thread are arguing without understanding that the school-based provider WAS the back-up plan, and it was a plan that worked until the very recent past. [/quote]

You need to consider if the roads are clear for the minimum workers and overall safety for everyone.  You still need a back up plan to facility based care.   That is not the kind of back up we are talking about. [/quote]

Please explain how the roads can be clear for high school employees (and the facilities and bus service workers who have to start hours before), but not child care staff working out of elementary schools.[/quote]
