She will win if she runs again. She's more popular than anonymous keyboard warriors think. Almost all of her most ardent critics are the city's most mediocre white residents, the kind of low-information people who support Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau.
What? In 2022, she barely beat Robert White, who ran a terrible campaign and whose prospects were severely diminished by the mysterious decision of Trayon White to join the race. In 2026, DC will have RCV and so she won’t be able to get by through relying on vote splitting. And I can’t think of anything she has done in the past two years that would have made her more popular, but can think of many things she has done (or not done) that have further demonstrated her to be terrible at her job. Her forthcoming efforts to saddle taxpayers with the expense of building a playground for billionaires is not going to endear her to the DC voting public much either. Christina Henderson or Randy Clarke would easily defeat her.
There isn't really anything about those two, or really anyone else, that indicates they would beat Bowser, let alone easily. And even if they did beat her somehow, would they actually run the city any better? Henderson in particular seems to have her short resume as her best asset. Which is useful in an election (yay democracy!) but not really a good predictor for being a good mayor. The reality is that it will be almost impossible to find someone who would actually be a better mayor and could beat Bowser in an election.
Fair point. And this is the problem that we’re having with democracy in this age. The connection between administrative competence and electability is becoming weaker and weaker. Randy Clarke would certainly give Bowser a run for her money based on all the good PR he has earned from turning Metro around, but it’s doubtful that he would want the job. He makes much more than the mayor as head of WMATA and can probably have his choice of running almost metro system around the world. Christina Henderson is extremely smart and would undoubtedly do a much better job than Bowser at running the city. But she has almost no profile at the moment, even compared to the likes of Brooke Pinto and Charles Allen. If she manages to make herself more well known, she could probably have a chance at unseating Bowser in an RCV race.
A white male has zero chance of becoming mayor in DC right now. A white male who has only lived in DC for two years has less than a zero percent chance of becoming mayor. People need to stop relying on GGWash and the Washingtondc subreddit for their news. Henderson's problems start with the fact that she shares a home ward with Bowser, and Ward 4 isn't not voting for Bowser. Henderson maybe could win Ward 1 but would struggle in every other ward.
Catania - a white Republican no less - came within a whisker of beating her in 2014. Maybe the DC is not as racist as you think they are.
