My grandparents didn't consider Italians white, and avoided all interactions with any recent immigrants including the Irish and Germans.

What simply is lacking here is knowledge of basic American history, including immigration.  The idea that all immigrants in the early 20C or 19C were legal is silly on its face.   Latter of course does not mean we can ignore the flood of illegals at the border.[/quote]
