Chen has served on zero advisory committees and voted to approve zero minutes. We have crappy candidates apart from Kathleen, so there’s the watermark, I guess.
He’s not trying to inflate his credentials either. Since she already has all the endorsements, Zuraya should just be honest she doesn’t have much experience.
But Zuraya does have experience, she worked at Meta, the parent company of FB and Instagram. “Meta the company that owns Facebook and Instagram has for years relied on both social media platforms to keep children and teenagers engaged for as long as possible in order to gather personal data and sell it to advertisers, a group of state prosecutors alleged in a recently unsealed complaint. Attorneys general in 33 states filed a federal lawsuit against Meta in October, although the details at the time were not immediately released. The complaint, unsealed Wednesday, unveils more specifics, such as allegations from state prosecutors that Meta harmed young users on Facebook and Instagram through the use of highly manipulative algorithms and technological tools. that was accused by attorney generals in 33 states for creating addictive technology for youth to keep them hooked “
This is ridiculous. I’m voting for Kathleen and Chen but don’t need to drag Zuraya through the mud. And we’re surprised no one more qualified wants to run for school board.
What did Zuraya do at Meta? She's a lobbyist right?
+1
DP, not a Zuraya fan or booster. I’m actually okay with lobbyists running for SB. APS could use some help in that department down in Richmond rn. And let’s not pretend that some of you Arlington parents aren’t federal/state lobbyists too. APE seems to have a lot of them spreading tears about “learning loss”
I don't like the APE lobbyists AT ALL. What's your point?
The point is that people right here are accusing Zuraya of being a lobbyist, like it's a bad thing that she is one or was one. (Doesn't she work for a Spanish TV station or something like that?) Someone astutely just pointed out that many of APE's leadership are lobbyists too.
She's Senior Director of Government Affairs. That is a LOBBYIST.https://chci.org/staff-and-leadership/zuraya-tapia-hadley/
Given her history of working for a social media company and currently an entertainment platform, it does seem relevant to ask her stance on device usage in the classroom and in our schools. Social media companies have a huge financial incentive for kids to stay on their devices as long as possible, including during the school day. From a PBS article “ "Although social media platforms may claim that they can self-regulate their practices to reduce the harms to young people, they have yet to do so, and our study suggests they have overwhelming financial incentives to continue to delay taking meaningful steps to protect children," said Bryn Austin, a professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard and a senior author on the study….The platforms themselves don't make public how much money they earn from minors.” The study went on to estimate $11 billion is made off of youth targeted ads. Is Zuraya a key player in a conspiracy to increase ad clicks during the school day? Doubtful ! But has her experience at these companies impacted her thinking on the subject? Has she drank the company kool-aid and thinks devices in schools aren’t a big issue? Mental health workers, educators, pediatricians, even the surgeon general are all saying devices are wreaking havoc on the education system and the social/mental health of our youth, yet we can’t seem to get rid of them or come up with real solutions! How will Zuraya’s work with these social media companies impact her decision making on school board for what many educators would say is one of the biggest impediments to learning right now?
