So when will the current students who are in 6th grade be taught grammar?
This is my question. I have two kids (10th and 6th) that were taught using this Lucy Calkins/Fountas and Pinnell method and I think we can all agree it was a disaster. So, for all those kids who are now going into 7th next year and up.....is anything going to be done to help them? I'm not standing over here whining because it is what it is - but the fact is, my kids weren't taught to read properly and we know that now. My 10th grader still "guesses" words and heads to one they know that is "closest" to the one they don't, and my 6th grader, don't even get me started on spelling, grammar or the ability to write a complete sentence because they can't.
Did you ever bother to get outside help for them or did you just throw your hands up?
Yes, I did get them outside help. Shame on you, throwing the assumption that sending my kids to school and assuming they would be taught to read back in my face. Depending on what grade(s) your own children are in, I challenge you to ask them about their experience learning how to read. Moreso, I'd ask you to listen to the "Sold A Story" podcast. This issue is not just FCPS. It's really a shame what happened to these kids.
