Very interested in this as I don’t usually hear a lot about St Albans. Truly would appreciate any info comparing these schools as we are applying for 9th
I have children at both. Given what I know about Sidwell, I would not choose it again. It’s extremely high stress with indifferent, sometimes incompetent, teachers some of which pride themselves on being tough teachers who do not give As. Your child could nearly kill themselves to get a B+. Laissez-faire approach that lets kids sink or swim. They’re supposed to advocate for themselves which is BS and ignores power teachers have over students. Strong science program. Intensely competitive anxious kids. Status conscious HOS that is into schmoozing it up with high status Democrats, could care less about unconnected families. CCO that is totally incompetent. Kids get admitted despite them. Quaker in name only. Overall grade: C+ STA is not perfect. No school is. If you are liberal / progressive be warned there are many MAGA / CCC families. The HOS runs scared of these families who constantly accuse him of being too woke. Teachers are more supportive. Some Sidwell types but they are fewer. More supportive environment between the boys. Exceptions in some grades but for the most part the brotherhood is real and protective. Helps the boys endure the high levels of stress. Strong English, history classes, weaker than Sidwell in science. Not an easy school for nonathletes because much of school life revolves around sports. Due props given to award-winning robotics team and model UN types. They can carve out a space of their own. Chapel and ethics are a serious part of STA life / curriculum. For some kids it goes in one ear and out the other because privileged entitled parents counter what’s taught at school. Overall grade: B+
I feel for the HOS. He is a good guy but I agree with you on the MAGA families and CCC. Many are one in the same. The governing board needs to support the HOS more and the governing board needs to add more families that are not at the two big country clubs to give a different perspective. Lots of successful wealthy parents at the school that are not part of that crowd that would be an asset to the governing board.
