OP, my DS got into all of the schools he applied to except for UMD, which was the only one he really wanted to go to. For financial reasons, he is probably not going to any of the other schools (they are all OOS schools, and one has already given him $ (just not enough); the rest are waiting on FAFSA). He did apply to UMBC on 2/1 but he told his guidance counselor that he refused to apply to any more schools beyond that (she wanted him to look at Binghampton too). Our current plan is to have him live just off-campus at UMD and either go to CC or UMBC for a year, then transfer to UMD. That way, he can get involved in UMD's student life (we'll get him on a meal plan there) and will have the full college experience, even if it's not THAT college's full experience the first year. There are other people in our community (in Montgomery County) who have done/are doing the same thing. We didn't look at some of the other suggested schools partially because he's not going to be a STEM major and partially for religious reasons. Good luck!
I'm very curious about this approach because I could see my son wanting to do something similar with UMD. I'm wondering how feasible it is to integrate into the campus at all this way in that first year though, if you're not joining studen my clubs, living in the dorms, taking classes on campus, etc?
