With violent crime soaring back to 90s levels, it's time to bring back broken windows policing. Discuss.
We already know Broken Windows doesn’t work. The cops mostly ended up hassling working class black guys on their way to their jobs (or coming home from work), because those were easy targets for making their monthly “stop” numbers. Most cops didn’t want to actually deal with a legit gangbanger carrying a firearm. I’m fine with bringing back the jump out squads who target drug dealers or folks selling stolen goods. Also fine with random traffic stops to ensure license plates are legit, vehicle is not stolen, or no outstanding tickets greater than $1000 (this will ensnare a lot of Maryland vehicles).
There are thousands of NYC area transplants now living in DC that can report Broken Windows does work.
It didn’t do sh#t except violate the Constitutional rights of thousands of NY’ers. The NYPD found a gun or open warrant in like 1 out of every 300 stops. What about the rights of the 299 innocent people who were hassled? Black school kids who were randomly stop & frisked were more likely to do poor on tests, drop out of school, suffer from anxiety & depression, and not vote. Even Bloomberg has apologized for stop & frisk, saying it was ineffective: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/02/upshot/stop-and-frisk-bloomberg.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare The only time “stop & frisk” worked was when the cops already had probably cause about an individual. In other words, they had clear evidence or observation that the individual was actively engaged in a criminal activity. They didn’t even need stop & frisk to detain the individual. Some elements of broken windows does work to provide a more orderly environment - cleaning up graffiti, ticketing littering, jumping out on drug dealers, enforcing traffic laws, etc. But stopping random black guys?
Broken Windows is not the same as Stop and Frisk...
