I’d say if you are ticked off by events in a country other than the U.S. (often much more than by domestic events) you haven’t assimilated. -DP
This would appear to mean that a lot of young white progressives who are ticked off AT Israel haven’t assimilated, among other problems with this definition.
aren’t they also passionate about just about everything in this country?
You think most Jews only care about Israel and don't care about any domestic politics at all?
DP No. American Jews care about domestic politics first BUT The fervor in which they care about Israeli issues far surpasses any other -“hyphen Americans” and their old world connections Cuban Americans are probably second to Jewish Americans on this phenomenon. Most other hyphen Americans either: 1. Dislike their old world roots 2. Ignore their old world roots 3. Are ignorant or don’t care about their old world roots As an example: 1. German Americans are all across PA and the Midwest but have zero interest in German domestic and geopolitics. In fact considering most German Americans are republicans, the majority of German Americans dislike modern Germany and think it is an effete and dumb country. 2. English Americans are heavily in the south, Utah, and New England. Most English Americans are totally ignorant on modern 🇬🇧 affairs, don’t care about 🇬🇧, and many outside of performative interest in the royals think 🇬🇧 is cringe 3. Italian Americans have superficial interest in Italy but it’s almost a stereotype when the first time they interact with modern Italy, they hate it. 3. Most non-white hyphen Americans either dislike their old world countries or just try to “out of sight out of mind.” There are some for sure into their old countries but do not really use political influence in great force to shape geopolitics with an “old world centric”‘posture. Jews are by far singular in their focus on a foreign country
None of those other groups had to contend with people trying to wipe them off the planet(and nearly succeeding) all throughout history.
That’s fine and good - I’m not suggesting Israel shouldn’t exist or assert its interests my point is if Jews here care so much, please move to Israel That’s one thing I def agree with many Zionists - all Jews should move to Israel if they care that much about it (which it’s clear they do)
What level of care about Israel are we not permitted to exceed if we want to remain in America? Is it, like, a measure of how many Knesset members’ names we know? Total number of visits to Israel in a lifetime? What if we once rooted for Israel in a World Baseball Classic game on TV??? You do realize you’re basically echoing the old Jew-hating idea that Jews aren’t really loyal citizens to any country we live in, right?
I had the same reaction reading that comment. Is there a bingo card of caring about Israel and if we get 5 in a row we have to move? Do I need to disavow my siblings and their children who live there? Should I have the trees I planted through JNF pulled out of the ground? Does my kid's birthright trip last year make me ineligble to remain in the US? Please tell me how I prove my loyalty to America to keep me from being shown the door.
Herzl would tell you to make Aliyah asap
