Others are parents with kids. The homeless population is also aging, with estimates of 40% to 50% being over the age of 50. Physical handicaps and diabetes (including complications of diabetes) are also common. Keep in mind, too, that many people with mental health or substance abuse problems are not homeless, are more likely to be poor and to therefore become homeless intermittently. It is also the case that homelessness exacerbates existing mental illness. Estimates vary, but the highest estimates still conclude that less than half of homeless people are mentally ill or have substance use disorders. [/quote]
