You can choose to wear something that’s unattractive. That’s absolutely no problem. What gets me is the ones that come on here, post a hideous sandal and then get hurt or whiny that people hate them. If you are posting them to ask if they are hideous, they are hideous.
Then post the ones you wear since you have such an opinion about everyone else’s sandals and their opinions! The posters laughing at everyone else and coming across as judgmental b**ches have yet to post their own sandals Newsflash: most sandals are ugly.
Blasphemy
So i'm a poster who has been horrified by the number of orthopedic options posted on this thread, and i'm pretty shocked at how confused these posters seem by a really basic question. That said, i actually agree that the vast majority of sandals ultimately end up making people look terrible. But to back up one step, i think some sandals are hideous (keens and all the similar ones posted here - those are objectively ugly shoes). And other sandals are adorable. There have been many cute, cute sandals posted on this thread (most of the non "hiking" sandals). But..... once you take those cute sandals, that are comprised solely of a couple thin straps and provide almost no coverage, and you put them on easily the ugliest least cute part of the body..... almost all sandals look like garbage on real people's feet. Feet look like they belong on yetis. Then you shove some straps between the toes, and yank the big toe one direct, and the heel starts sliding off the back (because most people's feet don't stay straight in shoes) and it's one giant mess. I have a freakishly narrow scope of sandals that i'll wear - generally they need to be a slide with decent coverage and very little toe cleavage. I don't have particularly ugly feet. I'm just surprised how normalized exposing our ugly feet has become.
I think this is my problem. Feet are not cute in general, so a little delicate sandal might look cute in a photo but will not make your foot look cute. So I don't see the point in these little unsupportive sandals with the little straps that barely hold it on because 99% of people are going to look pretty meh in them. Meanwhile, if you have great legs and a tan, I think a nice pair of Birkenstocks is really flattering -- your foot isn't falling out of them, they are made with natural fibers like leather, metal, and cork (not plastic, so many of the recommended shoes are made with plastic, faux leather, polyester, etc.). I think people look more cute in these shoes because they are designed to function like actual shoes and not like useless toe adornments. I very rarely see a woman in a "cute" sandal and thing "oh, that's so flattering." But I often see women in Birks, Mephistos, Vionics, etc. and think "oh, that looks nice." Yes the keens are offensive. But a lot of the shoes deemed orthopedic, old lady, or ugly on this thread... I think they are more attractive than the flimsy little strappy sandals people are suggesting.
