That only matters when your kids are little.  Many drop swim team when they get older and by the time they are in high school they have daily practices for fall sports starting August 1st.  No one is traveling during August if their kid plays a sport.   SOLs, AP and IB exams are in May.  The earlier school ends the better to have time off in June and July.  [/quote]

That's only true for fall sports. My son plays baseball, so August is our only time to travel. He has travel through the end of July and a break til after Labor Day. In high school, baseball is a spring sport. This is a similar schedule for competitive swimmers.

I think the best compromise is one week before Labor Day start until mid-June. They should easily be able to fit 180 instructional days into that time period if they do a few less PD days or cut out a couple of the random holidays. [/quote]
