These analogies are lame but predictable.

If your kid can't make the basketball team, there are other activities they can get involved in at their neighborhood school.  TJ doesn't serve many of the kids in the neighborhoods closest to the school in any capacity. It's a vanity project that arguably made sense as long as there was surplus capacity in FCPS and a consensus around how students should be admitted, but now FCPS could use the additional seats and the debates over TJ admissions have become a divisive, expensive time suck.
