This.. Sorority rush is VOLUNTARY. There is self selection in all groups in college, sororities or not. Not sure if rush is anymore cruel than trying out for a team and being cut?

It's entirely different!  When trying out for a sport, I don't get to rank Football, Basketball, baseball, swimming and tennis as to which teams I'd like to join and wait for them to rank me back after 5 minute of speed dating 5 members of the team. Instead I would attend a tryout for the sport and go through workout, drills, playing the actual sport for several hours/days.  If I have the skills I will make the team.  are you actually comparing the qualities to be in a sorority (looks, makeup, dress, family background, who you are dating, etc. ) to be the same as the qualities to be on the baseball team (fast pitcher, great hitter, good fielder, fast runner, etc). Tryouts for a sports team are 90% quantitative and 10% if the coach likes your attitude/academic desire at the college level/non-quantitative things important to a team.  Those who make the swim team are those who are fastest swimmers at the trials---there is no question who that is after the swim trials are completed.  
Key point: I can work to make myself better at a sport.  
In Sorority rush, I can't make myself prettier, change my family background or economic background, skin color, ethnic background or clothing (ie if I can't afford designer clothes I can't magically make them appear).

Just like in the real world, unless I'm a model, how I look should have no bearing on whether I get a job or not---only my qualifications to do the job should matter.

Yes, rush is voluntary.  But when something is toxic for society, we shouldn't just say "it's voluntary, you just don't do it". we should work toward eliminating that toxicity.

Philanthropic service clubs that anyone with an interest can join could easily replace the "good work" that greek life provides.  [/quote]
