I'm not saying that I'd do the same thing they did, but I can understand wanting to keep your only remaining child out of the juvenile system for what may have been an accident.  Maybe he would've gotten some kind of lenient sentence, but they didn't know that in the moment. I hope they got him whatever help he needed over the years.[/quote]

Feel free to read the rest of what I wrote.  They could've "lost" him to the juvenile justice system, and who knows what would have happened to him there.  They were rich and could've had great legal representation, I'm sure, but they weren't lawyers and probably had little to no experience with criminal justice.  And even if a lawyer got him off the hook, he'd been forever known as the kid who killed his sister.

In a crisis moment, with their daughter laying their dead, and the risk that their son could be taken away?  They made a snap decision to shield their son from the consequences.  I'm not at all saying it was right.  But I do feel pretty confident that that's how it happened.[/quote]
