The wedding may be generic but the bride and groom look great. She’s very pretty and slim and he’s good looking in that wasp-y patrician sort of way. His hair looks good, her outfits are cute, flower girl dresses are sweet …. Really have to dig for something to not like here. Haters are gonna hate, I guess.
Will Kopelman, WASPy? Okay. Do you know what WASP is?
Um, yes, I do. And despite being of Jewish decent, the groom is clearly going for that New England Anglo look, with the hair, the slight tan, and the J. crew suit, and nary a kippah or chuppah ANYWHERE nor to mention the aesthetic of the wedding. An observation, not an insult. - A Jew
Maybe they're not observant Jews? Is that allowed? - another Jew
Sure, of course. But the observation up thread that it’s a WASP-y aesthetic has been met with people calling out that the groom and family is Jewish and that poster is “stupid.” The groom and family are 100% downplaying any Jewish or religious roots in favor of a more New England WASP vibe. That’s fine, I’m a non practicing Jew too. But it doesn’t negate the observation.
His family is very religious and this is a big reason why the marriage with Drew didn't work out, as she didn't convert. The girls are raised Jewish and traditional. Allie's mom is Jewish of Russian descent. Maybe this is the wedding that she wanted.
Well, it's obvious she didn't want a Jewish wedding! There's not a single photo of a chuppah, no mention of a rabbi, no mention at all of any ritual that you'd find in a Jewish wedding. If the groom is so religious, then it's amazing that there was no desire on the bride's part to honor that important tradition. I think that conspicuous, conscious decision to not display any bit of Judiasm in the wedding publicity is, well, very telling...
How do you now it wasn't HIS CHOICE? I have a few Jewish friends that married Christians that had a Christian wedding and they have a Christmas tree and do more things with the Christian side of the family than the Jewish. Some Jews, just like Catholics and Protestants are lapse ones and it isn't a huge part of their life even if they were raised a certain way as a child. And, you didn't see an entire video of the ceremony and reception so you have no idea if any elements and other traditions were incorporated.
+1 And some couples, like my parents (one Jewish, one Christian) decided to raise their kids as Christians. Just as one can convert to Judaism, it's also possible to convert to Christianity. You don't even have to convert. You can live and raise your kids as you see fit. I see nothing unusual at all in their decision not to incorporate Jewish elements of the ceremony. That's their CHOICE. And, as you say, we have no idea what went on at the reception. Perhaps they danced the Horah, perhaps not.
